Pregnancy After Loss: Finding Hope and Health In Second Trimester

Celebrating 13 Weeks: A Journey Through Grief, Grace, and Growing Life

I’ve crossed into the second trimester at 13 weeks many times now…three to be exact. And each time I’ve been overwhelmed with gratitude to leave the challenging first trimester behind. My husband and I have walked through four miscarriages, along with the healthy births of our three sons. Our journey of growing our family has been anything but easy however, I can assure you it’s been full of God’s grace and faithfulness.

Navigating Pregnancy After Loss

My pregnancy after loss journey has carried profound meaning for my family. After experiencing four miscarriages since 2019, my husband and I have welcomed three beautiful boys into the world. I have learned what it means to hold both caution and hope simultaneously as I’ve journeyed through pregnancy.

Pregnancy after loss creates a unique emotional landscape. Excitement bubbles up, but fear plants its flag firmly in your heart. You find yourself balancing on the edge between joy and anxiety, trying desperately to find peace in the uncertainty. If you’ve walked this path, you understand the complexity words can barely capture.

Through grief and joy alike, I’ve discovered that God meets us exactly where we are. He holds us when we’re doubled over in tears, and He steadies us when we stand in anxious celebration. Even through pregnancy after loss, He never disappoints. I say this to you, friend, with full assurance.

My second miscarriage in 2021 brought me face-to-face with a difficult truth: I had developed an entitled attitude about having children. I believed God owed me. That realization hurt, but it was necessary. Children are gifts, not possessions or guarantees.

Prioritizing Holistic Health During Pregnancy

Through every pregnancy, I’ve approached it differently. My focus became more on wholeness across three dimensions: mental, emotional, and physical health. Here’s what that looks like practically.

What I Did Differently

Rest and Recovery

  • Taking intentional rest breaks throughout my day whenever my body signals the need to rest
  • Napping when my toddler(s) napped (this single habit saved me throughout every pregnancy and into postpartum seasons)
  • Walking almost daily for gentle movement and mental clarity

Intentional Movement

  • Followed a prenatal workout program at GlowBodyPT or Nourish Move Love that supported my changing body
  • Focused on functional fitness rather than aesthetic goals

Mental and Emotional Wellness

  • Extended abundant grace when I couldn’t complete my to-do list
  • Releasing guilt when I had less energy for my son(s) than I’d prefer
  • Planned my business tasks ahead to minimize postpartum stress
  • Skipped the pregnancy apps and constant tracking (it’s freeing!)

Body Positivity Practices

  • Investing in maternity clothes that made me feel beautiful and comfortable
  • Praying through a healthier body image perspective
  • Confronting weight concerns honestly
  • Skipping prenatal vitamins and focusing on getting all my nutrients from food (consult your healthcare provider about what’s right for you)

Rethinking Body Image: A Biblical Perspective on Pregnancy Weight

Here’s where I need to be direct: I’m troubled by our culture’s obsession with pregnancy weight and postpartum bodies. The pressure to stay within certain weight ranges, to “bounce back” quickly, to fit Pinterest-perfect standards—it’s exhausting and unhealthy.

Where is our biblical perspective on health and beauty? What does Scripture actually say about how we should care for these temporary vessels we inhabit?

Scripture for Body Image During Pregnancy

I encourage you to meditate on these passages:

  • Proverbs 3:1-8 – Trust in the Lord with your whole heart
  • Proverbs 4:20-23 – Guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life
  • Matthew 6:22 – The eye is the lamp of the body
  • 3 John 1:2 – I pray that you may enjoy good health

Let God reshape your understanding of health and beauty. Allow His truth to fill the spaces where cultural lies have taken root.

Balancing Practical Health with Spiritual Truth

Don’t misunderstand me—I absolutely believe in the importance of exercise and whole foods nutrition. These practices are non-negotiable for healthy living. But they aren’t the foundation.

Before we focus on macros, workout schedules, or weight goals, we need God’s Word. We need to understand our identity in Christ and the depth of His love for us. Health practices flow from that foundation, not the other way around.

A Word to Every Expectant Mama

You are enough, exactly as you are.

You are beautiful, carrying life within you.

Your worth isn’t determined by a number on the scale, the size of your maternity jeans, or how quickly you “bounce back” after delivery.

You are loved beyond measure.

The Lord is with you in this season – pregnancy after loss – and He will guide you hand in hand as you navigate the everyday unknowns.

Natural Nausea Relief Tips

What helped me survive first trimester sickness:

  • Copious amounts of lemon water throughout the day
  • Sourdough bread (the tangy, fermented goodness was a lifesaver)
  • LMNT Electrolytes (I’m addicted!)
